How to Care for Your Lamson Knives

Good Tools Deserve Good Care.

Your Lamson tools are made to be used and made to last. A few simple habits can help keep them looking their best and performing the way they should for years to come.

Here’s how to care for them from the moment you’re done cooking to the occasional maintenance that keeps them in good shape.

Wash by Hand

After use, wash your knife with warm, soapy water and a sponge. Wash along the grain rather than scrubbing across it, keeping the sharp edge pointed away from you. Always be aware of the edge when washing your knives, and take your time. There’s no need for anything complicated. Warm water, soap, and a sponge are all you need for everyday cleaning.

Don’t Let It Soak

Prolonged exposure to water can be hard on your tools. Wood can absorb water when left submerged, causing it to swell and potentially contributing to warping or cracking over time. Excess moisture can also affect the metal, leading to surface discoloration, patina, or rust. So don’t leave your knife sitting in the sink. Wash it, dry it, and put it away.

Skip the Dishwasher. The combination of heat, water, and detergents can be tough on your knife, particularly on wood handles and finishes.

Dry & Store With Care

Once your knife is clean, dry it completely with a clean towel. Take your time and stay mindful of the edge while drying, just as you do when washing. Before putting your knife away, make sure it’s completely dry. Then store it properly in a knife block, knife sheath, or blade guard designed to protect the edge. Don’t toss a loose knife into a drawer. It’s not good for the edge, and it’s an easy way to reach into a drawer and accidentally meet the sharp end.

Beyond Everyday Cleaning

Washing and drying take care of the day-to-day. Conditioning gives your tools a little extra protection.

Care for Wood & Leather

Wood is a natural material and can become dry with use. When you notice a wood handle, cutting board, or other wood piece starting to look dry, it’s time for some conditioning.

Mineral oil helps replenish moisture and can help protect wood from drying, splitting, and cracking.

Beekeeper’s Gold, a beeswax and mineral oil blend, helps condition and protect wood and leather while helping seal out moisture.

You don’t need to do this every time you cook. Just keep an eye on your wood and give it some attention when it needs it.

Give Metal Some Extra Protection

Mineral oil can also be used on metal to provide a protective barrier against moisture and corrosion.

A light application is all you need, particularly when storing a tool for an extended period or when you want an added layer of protection.

Crafted With Care. Worth Caring For.
