F.A.Q. (Frequently asked questions)
How are Lamson products different from all the rest?
Many elements set our products apart from the countless others on the market today. All Lamson kitchen tools, trade tools and cutlery are American-made, designed by hand in Westfield, Massachusetts. We employ incredibly skilled craftsmen who have a proven passion for the work they do. Using superior materials and advanced precision machinery, they produce each item for ultimate functionality, then add signature hand-finishes (such as rounded spines and choils) that other knife companies can’t reproduce. The result, every time, is an elegant, durable piece that’s been crafted to perfection.
How long has Lamson been in business?
Lamson & Goodnow was founded in 1837 in the picturesque town of Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts. We produced cutlery in our original factory there for nearly 180 years, relocating in 2015 to a more modern facility in Westfield, Massachusetts, a few towns to the south. Having become the premier American cutler shortly after its establishment, Lamson notably gifted new U.S. president Ulysses S. Grant with an exquisite 62-piece dinner set in 1869.

How do I care for my knife?
For maximum benefit and beauty, we recommend these measures:
- Steel your knife regularly and before every use to help maintain its edge. (See the next question for more information.)
- Use wood or plastic cutting boards. Corian®, glass, and other hard surfaces can dull blades quickly.
- Clean knives after every use.
- Hand wash only; NEVER place knives in the dishwasher. Harsh dishwasher detergent and bleach can harm blades and wooden handles.
- Store knives properly. Storing knives in a LamsonSharp™ KnifeSafe™, wooden knife block, wooden knife tray or magnetic strip will help protect blades and hands.
- Use knives only as intended.
- Never use a knife as a chisel, screwdriver, can opener, or for any other purpose for which it was not designed.
How do I properly steel a knife?
Hold your sharpening steel vertically on a non-slip base. Hold the knife at a 20-degree angle to the steel’s shaft, then draw the knife in one smooth motion from the heel of the blade to the tip. Repeat five to six times on each side. Be sure to use the same number of strokes for each side.
How do I sharpen my knife?
Don’t! Lamson will happily resharpen your knives for free in our factory. Please use the “Sharp for Life” brochure for instructions. We will turn your knives around within 24 hours of receipt and send them back to you. If you are in the area, you can drop off your knives at our factory outlet store. There is no charge to sharpen Lamson knives. There is a $15.00 fee, for the first 4 forged knives, required for shipping and handling and $5.00 for each additional knife. You may send up to ten knives at a time.
What is covered under your Lifetime Guarantee?
Because we hold ourselves to a standard of perfection, all our knives and tools carry a limited lifetime warranty against any material or workmanship defects. Should you have a problem with a product, please send it back to us for review. Upon inspection, we will either repair or replace the item at our discretion. We cover most situations, but here are some we do not cover:
- Any knife that has been placed in a dishwasher will not be covered. Knives are not dishwasher safe and should NEVER be washed in a dishwasher. We also cannot cover heat damage caused by hot water or a stovetop.
- Any knife that has been used to pry open containers or for any other nonstandard purpose (for example, to split wood, dig for rocks or sword fight) will not be covered.
If a problem occurred during proper use of a knife for intended purposes, we will repair or replace the knife.
What is your refund policy?
In general, we will issue refunds for your full purchase price within 30 days of purchase. The product must be in resalable condition. Return notification request after 30 days will be subject to 20% restock fee. Return shipping to be provided by customer and insurance is recommended. Items lost in shipment can not be refunded. Please notify us of your request via firstname.lastname@example.org and a return procedure will be provided.
What is your shipping time frame?
With the exception of our Tree Spirit®, HotSpot® and KnifeSafe® lines, Lamson is a manufacturer, as opposed to a supplier. Therefore, an in-stock item is shipped within 48 hours of purchase. Because each individual item must be hand crafted to perfection, an item that is not in stock may take 4 – 6 weeks to produce.
Does Lamson give factory tours?
We occasionally provide customer or corporate tours, but it is not standard policy. The factory is running every day, and we do our best to stay out of the way during production; after all, there are sharp knives EVERYWHERE! If you are interested in notification about tours, please email email@example.com.
Can I still purchase Lamson products at the old factory?
Yes! Our Factory Outlet Store is located next to the original Lamson factory at 48 Conway Street, Shelburne Falls, 01370 and is open every day from 10 am – 5pm. We invite you to visit and explore! 413-625-0201
